Method 1: Add Alt Text to a Picture in Word 2016 and later versions

1. Click on the picture you want to add alt text to. This will activate the Picture Tools tab on the ribbon.

2. Click on the Format tab and then click on Alt Text in the Adjust group.

3. In the Alt Text pane, enter a description of the picture in the Description box.

4. If the picture is purely decorative and doesn’t add any meaning to the content, click on the Mark as Decorative check box.

5. Click on the Close button to save the alt text.

Method 2: Add Alt Text to a Picture in Word 2013 and earlier versions

1. Right-click on the picture you want to add alt text to and select Format Picture from the context menu.

2. In the Format Picture pane, click on the Alt Text tab.

3. Enter a description of the picture in the Description box.

4. If the picture is purely decorative and doesn’t add any meaning to the content, click on the Mark as Decorative check box.

5. Click on the Close button to save the alt text.

Adding alt text to pictures in Word is a simple process that ensures that your content is accessible to everyone.
