How To Get Alt Text On Instagram

How to Get Alt Text on Instagram

Alt text, also known as alternative text, is a description of the content of an image that is added to the HTML code of a webpage. When this HTML code is read by a screen reader, the alt text provides a verbal description of the image for visually impaired users. Instagram has recently added the ability for users to add alt text to their photos, which is a great step towards making the platform more accessible. In this article, we will discuss how to get alt text on Instagram.

Enabling Alt Text on Instagram

To enable alt text on Instagram, start by opening the Instagram mobile app and logging in to your account. Go to your profile and tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner of the screen. From there, tap on “Settings” and then on “Accessibility.” Toggle on the option for “Write Alt Text” to enable the feature.

Adding Alt Text to Instagram Posts

Once you have enabled the “Write Alt Text” feature, you can add alt text to your Instagram posts by following these steps:

1. Start by uploading your photo as you normally would.
2. In the “New Post” screen, tap on “Advanced Settings” at the bottom of the screen.
3. From there, you will see an option for “Alt Text” where you can write a description of the image you’re posting.
4. Once you have written the alt text, tap “Done” to save it to your post.

It’s important to note that alt text should accurately describe the content of the image. This means that generic phrases like “image of a person” or “picture of a sunset” should be avoided in favor of more detailed descriptions. By adding alt text to your Instagram posts, you are ensuring that all users, regardless of their visual ability, can fully engage with your content.
